Premier Danny Williams
On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I would like to welcome all participants to Happy Valley - Goose Bay for the 2006 Labrador Winter Games, more commonly known as the Olympics of the North.

Over 400 athletes and co-ordinators will come together this week to celebrate the sporting and cultural heritage of Labrador. Competitions will be held in events ranging from target shooting and badminton to dog sled racing and snowshoeing - a wonderful combination of traditional and modern sporting spectacles!

The Labrador Winter Games are famous for the friendly competition and camaraderie between communities. It is through exciting competitions such as these that our young people learn invaluable skills and develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

I offer a special thank-you to the 650 volunteers, coaches and organizers for your dedication to making this year's event the most successful Labrador Winter Games ever.

Best of luck to all athletes and my best wishes for a fun-filled competition.

Sincerely,
Danny Williams, Q.C.
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Leo Abbass, Mayor of Happy Valley - Goose Bay (larger version)
Mayor Leo Abbass
On behalf of the citizens of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, it gives me great pleasure as the Mayor of the hosting community to welcome Athletes, Coaches, Community Representatives and Dignitaries to the Heart of Labrador.

The competitive atmosphere that exists during the Games can be only surpassed by the past friendships that are rekindled at the Games and the new friendships that will surface and will last a life time.

An event of this magnitude doesn’t happen by chance. Without the continued financial support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada and the many sponsors, the likelihood of the Games happening would be jeopardized. Without the leadership of the Game’s Board of Directors and Staff, this event that showcases Labrador every three years would not be possible. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Once again, on behalf of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, please accept my sincere best wishes and good luck to all people who have contributed to the tremendous success of the 2006 Labrador Winter Games. See you throughout the week!

Sincerely yours,
Leo Abbass
Mayor

Lake Melville MHA - John Hickey
As the MHA for Lake Melville, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all athletes, community coordinators and volunteers to the 2006 Labrador Winter Games.

The Labrador Winter Games is THE premiere sporting event for Labrador, and showcases some of the finest athletic talent the Big Land has to offer. The Games brings together Labradorians of all ages and athletic ability, united in a common goal: to have fun in the spirit of competition.

I would like to recognize the fact that it was the PC Government of 1983, and in particular, the initiative of then-MHA and Cabinet Minister, Joe Goudie, that initiated the Labrador Winter Games over 20 years ago, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to say that Premier Williams and our government has again supported this great cultural sporting event.

I would like to congratulate the Games Board of Governors, the Games Director and Assistant Director, Games Support Staff and Games sponsors for organizing and supporting the 2006 Labrador Winter Games and making it one of the best games ever.

Congratulations and the best of luck to all athletes!

With every best wish,

MHA John Hickey
Lake Melville
