If you desire an amazing journey to the heart of a way of life steeped with tradition, then look no further. The Labrador Winter Games offer the thrilling excitement you are looking for. These games represent the passion of a people who have built their lives in a land where only the strong survive. This is the 10th running of the "Olympics of the North", an exciting slate of events for participants and spectators alike, which takes place every three years in the central Labrador town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Some 400 athletes and community coordinators from as many as 30 communities, along with almost 650 volunteers, will come together from March 7th - 13th of 2010 to celebrate the sporting and cultural heritage of Labrador.

Contests will be held in "traditional" skill testing events such as Target Shooting, Dog Sled Racing, Snowmobile Racing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoe Races, Northern Triathlon, Snowshoe Biathlon and the Labrathon (a test of the skill a trapper would need to survive on The Big Land). Well known events such as Ball Hockey, Volleyball, Darts, Badminton and Table Tennis will also take place.

Possibly the marquee event of the Labrador Winter Games will be the Northern Games. This event is a four part competition;

  • Labrador Hurdles, a test of endurance in which an athlete jumps feet together, over hurdles;
  • Over the Rope, a grueling test of strength and endurance as an athlete lifts his or her body over a taut suspended rope;
  • Seal Race, in which an athlete pulls his or her body, by hand, along a race course;
  • One Foot High Kick in which Athletes kick at a hanging target of 7 feet in the air at the outset of the event and increasing in height until only one successful competitor is ultimately proclaimed the winner.

Be sure to book your tickets early as this is competition is held over two nights to a packed house at the E.J. Broomfield arena.

This coming together of peoples from Labrador competing for community pride and in the fellowship that these Games inspire is an event second to none of its kind in our region of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Come celebrate with us and see first hand why this event is called the friendship games.
